Worming Zebras.

Post by Adam »

I have been using a product that seems to be quite promising. You can also combine other treatments with it as well, such as broad spectrum bacteriacides. I have just finished a course of the wormer and Interpet No 9 combined. It is also effective against flukes and protozoan parasites. The active ingredient is Flubendazole at 50% strength.

The treatment isn't widely available, in fact you only seem to be able to get it from specialist Discus sellers.

Here's where I got mine from:

It doesn't look like this product is legal in the US yet, it is marketed in the UK under the small animal excemption scheme. I am not sure what the position is with other European countries, please check first if you are planning on placing an order.

Regards.

Can you describe the symptoms your fish had prior to you administering this?

The links you gave just indicate general fluke and tapeworm problems.

I've used it. It's legal here in Norway, but you need a vet to write a prescription

I have used this as a matter of course every 2 months. I beleive that it can be used on a monthly basis. I just see it as maintenance as Ihave been using it for so long. I have never had a fluke or worm problem in any of my tanks to date maybe this is due to the wormer.

I've used it as well. It goes under the name Panacur here in the U.S. It is a common anthelmintic for farm animals and pets. I found it at the local farm store.

I too have used this for several years. it is not easy to get in the USA, My initial supply came from a fish wholesaler. After looking for many months I did locate a source for it here. It is also effective for wasting disease.

Levamisole is another good med for worms.
What makes the common person uncommon is common sense.

I use Panacur in the UK to worm my horse. I wonder if it is the same thing does it have a light yellow colour.

Just as an aside here, I'm pretty sure Panacur is FENbendazole, which does work, but not nearly as well as FLUbendazole (which is marketed as Flubenol). I've used Flubendazole at the directed strength on zebras with absolutely no problem. It's been a very effective treatment on everything I've used it for, except camallanus worms. I've used it on the system at the store at the suggested dosage twice now without any stress or probems with a huge variety of fish. It's a pain in the keester to get your hands on, but it's definitely worth the effort, IMO.
