Hi from Seattle USA
Hi from Seattle USA
I am new to zebra plecos, but not new to fish. I have been keeping fish for years. I have a 55 gallon community tank and a 200 gallon freshwater stingray tank. I just had my first child and we want to put a tank in his room. (Daddy just wants another tank!!!!!!) I really want to do zebra plecos to captive breed them to add to the population. I have the money and the room I just need to get my hands on some of these guys.
Hi Dave,
You might have left finding zebras a month or two too late, to be honest. They've officially stopped the import of them now. I'm in Spokane, and just recently started getting fry, but I probably won't have any available to leave until summer, at the earliest, and those will be a year or two from breeder size from all I've read.
I used to keep motoro stingrays. Which type do you have? Any excuse for a new tank is a good one, I always say

Currently I have 4 motoro stingrays. 3 females and a male. I have kept Leopoldi and Humerosas also. Rays are very fun
I did manage to find 5 zebras for sale but they are 85.00 a piece. I can wait till summer to buy from you if you are going to sell some. And maybe for cheaper than 85.00 a piece. I know I am just getting on the bandwagon but they are beautiful little fish and I'm sure I'll end up with some eventually. I just have to be patient and find them out! Congrats on the fry!

Hi Dave777
Welcome to the site, I hope you find it useful.
I take it you are in the US, and if so, sounds like you missed out on a bit of a bargain of zebrsa at $85 each.
The price will probably continue to rise, but hopefully with individuals like yourself out there that want to breed them, the price and availability will drop eventually.
Have fun!!
Rob

The perfect white lie..."Of course I didn't pay that much for the fish honey"
Hi Dave,
Zebras were selling for 100-103 dollars wholesale when they went on the restricted for export list. I'm not sure exactly what I'll be selling them for by the time next summer comes around. The $85 a zebra was definitely a smoking deal, especially if they were adults. I wouldn't pass it up!

Hi Dave777 and welcome to the forum.
I can understand your dilema with regards to the current price of zebras and the lack of certainty regarding the sex of the ones you are interested in. The only problem is that it is unlikely that the price of zebras will go down in view of the current embargo, if anything prices are likely to continue rising. Personally I would grab what you can now, wife permitting, you would be very unlucky if they all turned out to be one sex. $85 is a very good price compared to what we pay in the UK, prices are about £90($170) that's if you can find any.
Regards.
