Oxygen gadget (home made)!!!

I have made an oxygen circulation system using:

> Small airstone
> Cheap internal water filter (in this case interpret PF mini)
> Spare airline from an air pump
> Possibly an undergravel filter to help with the circulation (all will become apparent)

I am currently using this system in my community tank... A beta test so to speak... I am monitoring oxygen levels in the tank and will post the results once I have about 2 weeks worth of tests. Initially this system seems to be doing the job...

Stats:
temp: 28.9 degrees C
ph: 7.1
hardness: HARD (Treated tap water)

I will post video clips later tonight when I get back.

I'd be interested in your results. Oh, don't forget pictures.

How will you be measuring O2 levels? I would recommend the Salifert O2 test or even better, a digital meter (but that's way out of many people's price range).

Is there some sort of control tank? It would be nice to compare gas exchange via aeration vs powerhead pointed towards surface vs none at all.

Lastly, O2 levels at 28.9 C will be much different at 30-31.

Good luck with the experiment and we're waiting for the results! :D

Hi guys sorry bout the long delay... I am experiencing technical difficulties, my digicam has packed in... And am not sure that the oxygen test kit's results are reliable either!

Anyhow, I will take some photos on my cam-phone which although not great will be adequate.

I think the actual measure of dissolved oxygen in their native habitat is overstated. There's something to keep in mind that pressure and temperature are inversely proportional to the amount of dissolved gas.

At 1atm, and at 28.9C - the maximum amount of dissolved oxygen achievable is 7.6ppm.

At 1atm, and at 30C - the maximum is 7.4ppm.

Of course it's almost impossible to reach 100% saturation without the use of plants and CO2; thus I believe the level to aim for is around 5ppm.

sorry this has taken so long in the middle of doing ten things at once I finally remembered this post. I am currently working on a diagram to show the internal workings of this concoction...

I am really hopeful that it is effective... The initial signs look good... there are thousands of tiny bubbles everywhere inside the tank, and it seem as if the oxygen has hit saturation point... I have lots of big bubbles on the surface... almost like foam...

Still, the only way to find out is to test. I will post these results once I get my hands on the relevant test kit.
