Two's company three's a crowd!!

Post by Stevie.K »

I was greeted by this sight this morning, two females in the Alpha males cave.
This male has trapped these females once before which resulted in eggs from both females, but unfortunately the second female spawn was when the first fry were only around 8 days & were booted out of the cave, but only 2 survived & her eggs didn't hatch.
The male has been trapping one female on & off for the past 2 weeks, I have done big water changes but still no eggs yet! But today the other female wants a piece of the action!
The second female won the cave today & is now trapped!
Has anyone else seen this action before?
There are 5 or more mature males in the tank, but they must love this fella!

Females compete for the alpha male. Thats why males compete to become the Alpha. Having a colony will allow for multiple spawns because the 2nd female still needs a male for her eggs, and usually she will settle for number 2 rather than nonbody.

My personal feeling is one should keep either pairs or else a colony for the best results.
What makes the common person uncommon is common sense.
