Hey look!

We all know how difficult it is to identify the sex of these fish, so please post a picture in here and we'll try to help you (or at least give an educated guess!).

Hey look!

Post by Ed_R »

Got pics! I'm using links to save the sanity of those on dial-up.
THis is the smaller of the two. THis one likes hiding.

THis one is the bigger one, this one likes it out in the open.

Here's a pic of both of them together.

Sorry for the poor pics and the flash. One day I'll get it worked out. Maybe.

So anyway, whatcha think? Is this Ed's All-Girl Licorice Lover's Club, or is this the boy-girl Candy's Dandies?

I would say 95% certain fish on the right is a male and 80% certain fish on the left is a female. However, the possible female, although looking very healthy seems to have some evidence of stunted growth with the head end looking too large for the rest of the boy. Nothing to worry about and could just be the angle of the picture.

Tom, do you mean the fish in the lower right hand corner in the third pic is a male? The larger one?
Why do you think it's male?

Here are more pics taken at teh same time, but I think honestly the ones already postred are the better shots:

The smaller one:

The larger one:

Both together:

I'm really lousy at this, but it's fun nonetheless :) I think they both look like females, but are less certain on the smaller one.

I think that's sort of my guess to, McEve. The only two clues I have against it, though, are that te smaller one has odontodes on the pecs and the larger one doesn't, and the smaller one digs in and keeps to teh caves while the larger likes it outside.
I personally think it's too soon to tell with the smaller one, it's still under two inches TL. THe larger one looks much bigger but it's still only 2 and a quarter inches TL. Might be too small to sex yet.

Hi Ed_R,

Appearance wise I would say that they both look like females to me. However the behaviour of the smaller fish would suggest that it is a male. However I'm not so good at the guess the sex game, I regularly get it wrong.

Hi Ed,

Comparing the two from your first pictures, and not being able to see the odontodes I went on how mine use to look. My males tended to have a broader head and seem fractionally darker. Both your zebras are still relatively small so another inch and there should be no problems sexing them. My hunch with your two still says larger male, smaller female but I wouldn't bet much money on this at the size they are.

Cheers
