Seixng my L046 Zebra Pleco's

We all know how difficult it is to identify the sex of these fish, so please post a picture in here and we'll try to help you (or at least give an educated guess!).

Leigh we're going to need pictures that are quite a bit bigger than that to be of much help, I think. I'm old, I can barely see the fish in those! In looking at the URL for them, you've just linked to the thumbnail. Try linking to the main, larger image.

I think the first one looks very macho :D but debating a bit with myself on nr two. I think it might be a male also, it does have a rather broad head.... but the fins don't convince me.... I can't agree with myself on nr two :)

I think nr two is a female, the fins win :D

Btw, husky_jim - I can't see your avatar? Is it only me?

I'd say male for sure on both of them. See how the odontodes lay outside the groove that ties into their gills? While many of my females have heavy odontodal growth, none have it outside that. Sorry if that's bad news.

I was looking at that also, but this female has odontodal growth between the gills, and long ones too.

Why is it that it is the females that are so hard to identify? You can spot a macho male a mile away, but find that girl... she's got many disguises looks like

Hi Leigh,
I would say both are males.
They are both very well fed, the second one more so.
If I were judging just on body shape ,I would have said that the second one was a female, however when you look at the male chacteristics of long cheek odontodes which protrude to nearly half the width of the pectoral fins instead of staying within the cheek groove ( as Barbie also stated) on a normal female, makes me say that this is a male too. (However it might be a female with too much testosterone !!!!)
Regards,
Des.

I reacon both are males, although the second is slightly harder to identify due to the previous fin damage.

Thanks to all

I have had both confirmed as males by a breeder who has a colony of 22. The two are now back with the shop after they would not let them go as two males and after threats to sued them all monies were reutned plus extra for the hassle caused.

Thanks again

Leigh,
Considering that all exports of L046 have now stopped, why did you not keep both or one and then try and find a female mate for the male/s?.
I Presume that the shop sold them to you as a true pair?.

Des.

Loads of different catfish for sale.

Post by Tom2600 »

Hi,

I'm sorry to say no L046s are for sale from this guy, but I have just had a look on....

http://www.aquarist-classifieds.co.uk

.....and there are at least four new pages worth of catfish, many of them rare and at a pretty good price. Based in East Yorkshire but some of the catfish will probably be worth the travel.

Cheers

Not sure how that post got on here but I was trying to reply to Leigh.

Leigh,

How come you are so confident that you have 3 females and two males? What are the sizes and when can we see the pictures? You are a brave man to part with £600 for five zebras. I thought they would have knocked a bit off if you were buying five?

I really do wish you all the best in getting them to breed. :D

Cheers

Tom
