Is this a fair price?

If it's about fish in general, or it's a little bit random, then this is the place to post it.

Is this a fair price?

Post by crazie.eddie »

My nephew spotted a local ad for 6 L-046 zebra plecos for $3550 obo. I told him it was kind of ridiculous price for them. This is the ad...

I have only 6 L46 Zebra Plecos for sale. These are the coolest pleco on the planet. They are not cheap. Others sell this fish for $750+. I’m selling this group for $3550 obo. They range in size from 4-7 cm. They are eating omega 1 brine shrimp in 82 degree water for conditioning. These fish are rare and totally cool.
I told my nephew a confirmed breeding pair would probably go for about $1000, which is just a guesstimate from the ads I've been seeing.

Do you guys think it's a fair price?

I didn't want to place a URL for the actual ad to save the OP from being hassled from the ad.

 My best offer would not even be half of the asking price.

Maybe i am just spoiled here, price of those 6 would be here $ 1200,00 at the most and probably cheaper.
Greetings,
John

Prices for these beautiful fish are relative to regions. Europe seems to pay a lot less than North America and Australia pays even more than both of us for almost all pl*co species. However I would say this is still a tad high as I can get 2.5" to 3" at a retail store for 499.99 each here in Southern Ontario. I would expect the price from a private seller to be lower by a $100 or or so per fish.

Here in Austrialia Zebra are for $750 each and that is for a 4cm fish.
3500 is just about right for Austrialia.

Others sell this fish for $750+.
When someone tells you in their ad how much others are charging for this fish, you can tell it's BS maneuver to justify the exorbitant amount they are asking. The fair market value is not a low price for these fish and will vary from region to region but there are a lot of them in captivity already. It's just very difficult to locate them. If you're trying to buy a breeding group, be prepared to pay such a high price that you will also have to charge stupidly high prices to recoup your investment.

There is a lot of difference betweee 4 and 7 cm. 4 is about 1.5 inches while 7 is 2.75 inches. I sell the smaller size for between $125 and $150 each in lots of 5-8 fish depending if picked up or shipped. I have a long waiting list.

I can find the larger size, or a bit bigger, for about $400 if I wanted more.

Imer will sell you a group of 5 young breeding zebras for $560 each.

Given the demand for these fish, who knows what some folks will pay, especially if they have been looking for a while.
What makes the common person uncommon is common sense.
