Possible false zebra spawn

If it's about fish in general, or it's a little bit random, then this is the place to post it.

Possible false zebra spawn

Post by discusbabe »

Well something along those lines anyway! I have a trio of L129's in my other future zebra plec tank whom I have had for probably over a year now, thought to be two males and a female. Well one of the males lives in a barnacle cluster and this morning I spotted he had a companion in there with him! 8) They look like they may be getting jiggy with it as well!

Fingers crossed! Their only tank mates are some cardinals, a female fighter, an otto and some dwarf corys so they're not a problem but there is a lone Tatia Perugaie with them so hopefully he won't fancy a snack!

LMAO! I'm fine with the 3 I've got atm SmithRC tbh, only need one of each sex really! :P The tank they are in is due to be a zebra plec tank in the future but still waiting to get my hands on some more presently, the guys have just been helping keeping the tank going! 8) They were a steal when I bought them, I think I paid £20 for the 3 over a year ago! Shame we don't see more of them really! :(

If they do well though I may get away with another tank for zebra plecs yet, the other four are in a smaller tank so got a fair bit of room for them yet!

Aw well that's good news tho! :D I thought you would have closed the shed tanks down by now? :O I know you've been trying to for a while! The Starlights I got from you are still going strong, sold what I thought was a pair which turned out to be 2 males but kept 1 of each! :P I have since picked up 2 more very fat females! :P

Would happily take them off your hands but I'm keeping my tanks ready for my zebras and discus, I've really cut back on everything else.

Don't tempt me! I have a good selection of plecs but want to add to my zebras, hoping the L066 will get their act together soon as well!

Anyway, bad news as the eggs I managed to save clearly weren't done properly to put it simply! But I've got an idea of what triggered them so will give them a while and maybe try again! 8)

You missed the good news... you got eggs :)

Did you take the eggs out? - In my vast breeding experience (thats a joke - just so people know) I've always found it better to leave the male with the eggs - of the 3or 4 times I've had to try and raise teh eggs they normally end up fungused :(

If the male kicked them out then you've got no choice - again tif the are getting eaten - no choice - but I've found that a male fish does a lot better job than me and an airstone :)

fingers crossed, that once they start they will keep doing it - our zebs are spawning 6 weeks apart with no triggers ;)

I haven't heard of a sucessful rearing of eggs without the aid of a cleaning crew. You really need snails or water lice to keep them clean if you are to rear eggs. Some use methylen blue as well, but that's a 50/50 as far as I've been able to see.

Too bad about this spawn, but like smith said, you DID get eggs - next time they'll be good ;)

The only eggs that I've managed to save in a breeding net were ancistrus eggs and they were their first spawn, these wouldn't have survived either way but I had to give them a go! :D All three L129's are in the barnacle cluster now in neighbouring holes, the female is flirting around both males now!

I will let you all know if we have another spawn, I'm hopeful! 8)
