Re: Second Spawn!

That's interesting, I figured it would be 6-8 weeks between spawns.

You BET!!! I'm ready for February 20th!

Actually, it feels darn good getting to this point!

Second Spawn!

Yesterday morning I noticed that Lloyd was back in the cave that he spawn in previously - he hasn't returned since my wife and I took the fry away from him. I noticed he was acting like he was guarding eggs, but since it was the first time he has returned to the cave I figured it was wishful thinkin...

I think #4 *might* be a female.

Re: Male not in a cave yet

Recently my zebras spawned, so I figure something must be right. However none of my males, including the one that spawned, ever really stuck to the same cave. I also have a high cave to fish ratio, so that might have something to do with it as well (lots of options, no need to be picky). Sometimes m...

Re: What filter are you using?

I have a 34 gallon tank with:
1) Eheim Pro3e 2078
2) Eheim 2234 (not filtering, just driving the UV sterilizer)
3) Eheim Aquaball

On the 10 gallon grow out tank:
1) Eheim Aquaball
2) Eheim Aquaball (with one filter set, I think it's 1212 or 1216)

Re: New zebra pleco development....

Well, no new spawn...I can still see existing fry in with the dad. Still not sure how many fry I got from the spawn. Since there weren't' new eggs, I thought about pulling the babies last night, but their new tank still has about of week of cycling left to do and I didn't want to chance it. Things h...

New zebra pleco development....

Last night I completed making the little holding trap for the fry - basically a clear plastic convalescence continter modified to have screens on three sides. My plan was to pull the fry this week as I can tell some are getting quite large, with very distnct zebra stripes :D This morning I checked t...

Re: My first spawn...

There are an unconfirmed number of babies in the cave with Lloyd. He blocks the view of the babies, so getting any sort of count is darn near impossible. The most important thing - the spawn was (somewhat) successful! :D

Re: Question About Trapping

My zebras would do what you are saying. In fact, the female would only be trapped for a few hours at a time. Sometimes the trappings would be during the day, sometimes they would occur in the evenings at lights-out time. All together it hasn't been but a few months that I started noticed the trappin...

Re: My first spawn...

Five days after the spawn, Lloyd has some wrigglers! I think there are only 3 or 4. It is hard to tell how many, as Lloyd covers them up really well in the cave. One of the fry went wayward nearly out of the cave and I got a gray look. I was surprised with the large size of the fry. I think one baby...

Re: My first spawn...

TTA - that was a very interesting observation. One of my pleco breeding buddies showed me a very subtle way to try to determine the alpha male is to look at the color of the odontodes. The alpha male will have whiter odontodes, whereas sub-dominant males have a slightly more brownish hue. Blackie, t...

My first spawn...

After about 4 long years my zebra plecos spawned yesterday sometime and I noticed the eggs in one of the caves this morning. I had been letting the tank go through a "dry season" cycle for the past 6-8 weeks. Basically I have not been doing any water changes and letting the TDS creep up th...
