I grew out 15 young ones in 1 tank of 60x60x60 cm. which holds about 180 liters with one weekly wc of 33%. I did not notice any differences in growth in this batch of youngsters. All fry grew well and allmost equal in size. John, my situation is a bit different. I got 18 youngsters, but from 4 diff...

I think I'm beginning to answer my own question. Bottom line, I will split my growing zebras & keep doing daily water changes...can't hurt, besides I'm used to it.... Here's another quote from famous Discus Authority Roy Khoo: "Beta I want to know your opinion on Wattleys GHH (growth hinder...

Given that it doesn't affect fish in the wild, why would mother nature give the fish this ability? It would serve no purpose. Producing a hormone that slows the growth of other fish is hardly a great characteristic for survival of a species (as compared, say, to having a thin body which helps you h...

Just for the records, the hormone theory came from Wattley Discus. For those that don't know, Jack Wattley is considered the grandfather of discus, who has traveled worldwide Japan, Germany, etc doing research & author of several books. Wattley Discus is now run by Gabe Posada, who told me this ...

growth-inhibiting hormone?

I learn from the Discus people that the fish can produce a growth-inhibiting hormone by the Alpha males & females. For many years I was puzzled why I would start with a bunch of same-size discus and some would grow quick, while a few will stay smaller, given same tank, food, etc. The reason is t...

guys... I got caulk-sized silicone tubes & trust me, its not easy to work with as a paste. Adding sand to it will make it even harder to fit in the cracks, without messing & semearing the tiles. I've been thinking about it & I will just use tile grout, mix it with sand, fill the cracks, ...

Ok Alga, you forced me to show you a sneak preview of my secret project..LOL  the reason PVC cement is better to work with, its because its more liquid. If you pass silicon over sand, you'll get a mess in your fingers. I'll test both, but I might just use PVC cement to set the sand, let it cure...

Well, the application is something unusual...image pieces of tile bonded with silicon against the glass floor. Intentional space of +/- 1/4" between the tiles, filed with sand. The PVC will seal the sand in & cover all the tile to give it an even finish. I'm testing right now with some scra...

clear PVC cement & zebras...

....the one that is used to put together PVC pipes & do a lot of plumbery. I gather that it must not be toxic for fish, since it is even used for drinking water. I'm working on a tile/aquarium project & think that a thin layer of this will look great....besides its a lot easier to work with ...

McEve's tile tanks....

Hi McEve; I got inspired by your beautiful tanks with tiles & slates & I'm about to take the plunge with three 20 gal long tanks. How has it worked out for you? are you happy with it? Do you still prefered it better than sand substrate? Do the zebra like it? I've already bought the tile size...
