Stunning! :D

How big is it? Is this an adult we are looking at? How many do you have? It would be great to see you breed them.

I keep mine with Cherry shrimp and they make great tank-mates! Not too over-powering (when it comes to feeding time) and they happily pick up all the leftovers, they even help the male keep his entrance free of any debris. If you want tankmates, keep in-mind you need fish with the same behavior as Z...

I get it.

U-Shaped is male.
J-Shaped is the only one I'm unsure of; looks more like a male.
2-Spot is female.
V-Shaped is male.

Nice patterns!

Re: Greetings from Brazil.

Hello everybody. After being a long-time unregistered observer, I decided to join this community to try to know better and do something for the Hypancistrus zebra . I´m a brazilian biologist, with 20+ years of fishkeeping, and a member of the IBAMA staff. I'd love to see this magnificent fish becom...

Thanks everyone! :D

They're all unrelated and are about the same age. In the bigger picture you can actually see the two on the left have much longer ontonodes.

But look at that thick pectoral fin.

There's too many variations, some girly-males while others are manly-females. I wish Zebra's were more like Cichlids when it comes to sexing.

More to Sex

Well I finally managed to get four more Zebras (to add to my lowly two) from a friend of mine and I would like to know people's opinions on their sex. :) http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c28/Raul-7/zebra2.jpg My Opinion (L to R) 1. Male 2. Male 3. Female 4. Female I have no other pictures of them a...

Don't mean to bud in or sound rude, but try to find someone who actually has a mate for it. Try putting the species before your wallet in this case.

I was mentioning this theory to Kevin and he made an interesting point, if the case was lack of oxygen wouldn't all of the brood turn out snub-nosed? Or even more likely die?

BTW, could you make this topic a stickey?

You're right Al, that's why I use body-shape to determine sex. Females, tend to become plumper after their pectoral fins. Males are usually very streamline, no curves.

Like the one in question, it plumps up right after the pectoral fins.

Of course, I would like to know if this always true?

My regards.

When you dilute CO2 into the water, the pH will drop but the kH will remain constant. That's how we are able to measure CO2 concentrations using the kH-pH relationship.

kH is commonly measure in both dKH and meq/L. Ignore the other figures - concentrate on the .60 meq/L and 30 ppm (mg/L = ppm). They all mean the same thing, just different units of measure. 1 meq/L = 2.8 dKH = 50 ppm CaCO3 equivalents. Thus you have a carbonate hardness of 1.7 dKH, aim for at least ...

Don't feel down McEve. There is a solution. Seachem sells Metronidazole, I'm not sure how popular Seachem is in Europe but I'm sure there are online stores that will probably carry it. They recommend mixing 1 part (it comes with a small spoon) to 1 part Seachem Focus (Focus helps bind the antibiotic...
