I finally got my zeb's to breed. Is it normal for the male to leave the cave entrance to eat?

Would it be safe to feed zebras baby cichlid fry and eggs? Would they even eat them?

I only have to move them from one room to another. Any ideas on the driftwood? Did you use a net or your hand? did you just dump the bucket into the tank without acclimation? Sorry so many questions.
