I'd say at 2.25 inches and even at 2.50 inches it is still too young to accurately sex them, however, males are always a bit easier to spot than females and sub-males.

I use a timer in my tank setup. It is set to turn off my power head and filter for about 1 hour to stop the current flow as mine tank has high flow rate too. During that one hour, they know it is feeding time and put frozen food in (i.e. frozen brine shrimp, blood worm, diaphnia, baby brine, etc......

Those zebras may have died from either too much heat exposure from the heat packs which I highly doubt... or.. died from suffocation due to the lack of oxygen... but I would say more likely a combination of both, if not then definately from lack of dissolved oxygen.
