Starlight Bristlenoses :D
Starlight Bristlenoses :D
We've had some of these for a year now - started with 2 females and a male - but lost the male
3 weeks ago i happened upon a male hiding in the corner of a local shop.
well - I set them up in a new tank (in the shed) and they were not keen on the 35mm tubes so i added a group of slate caves... as of tonight he is sat in one of them fanning a nice pile of fertile eggs
here are some piccys (if you can ID with an L number i'll be grateful )
He moved in 2 days after adding the slate caves

Let me know if you want someMindy wrote:They look beautiful! And fantastic news about the eggs! Woo hooo!
I tried to buy some Starlights last year but the day they were due to be shipped, something had gone wrong in the tank and I couldn't have 'em. One day maybe...
Congrats again on the eggs!
Woo hoo - (sorry - i'm quite happy)

not entierlysure what L number they are - they were sold as L183's and i was told that they loose their seam as the get older (true of most plecs)
I'll know as the fry develop
which leads me to the next bit of news... We've got wrigglers!! Woooo!

Hey folks... Just an update...
On the 12th I went out there and got a shock...
There were more eggs in the cave - Woo... But no fry - Boo...
On closer inspection I had actually walked in on the 2nd female in the process of spawning
The male had her in the cave and she was laying eggs
The original fry were actually still in there but with 2 plecs in the same cave - I couldnt see them too well.
Since then we have approx 25 free swimmers from the first clutch and probubly abbout the same ammount of wriggles in the back of his cave.
The fry are not really big enough to say L183's or not as the markings are not developed enough yet...
Here is a piccy of one of the free swimmers - 10 days old.

Took a few more picture last week and again lastnight...
Here are some of them, the bigger ones are now 5 weeks old (hatched 7th Jan) the smaller ones are about 1week younger.
5 weeks old
mixed 4 and 5 weeks old
We've got a 3rd spawn however... we're having a few 'misshaps' at the momnet.
I disturbed Mr bristle when cleaning the filter in their tank and he deserted the eggs...
He'd turfed them out the next morning but was still in the cave, fanning, so I turfed him out and put the eggs back in .. it worked for a few days but he turfed them out again.
I Put them in a tupperware in another tank with water flowing through it but some had fungus
I checked them tonight and some made it... we have wigglers in a breedign net now. (we lost 75% to the fungus though )
The 2nd female will probubly spawn again in the next couple of days too
As for the existing fry, we've lost half a dozen so far - not bad really but I dont like loosing any.
I've been doing weekly 20% and everyother day about 5% water changes and feeding a good varied diet.
Fungus
But we do have some fry - fingers crossed for them

While true L183 lose some of the band, it should still show on the edges of the fins of adults, not disappear completely. The fry have a very vivid white band. The problem with these fish is that there are many different species and locational variants that aren't properly described and they basically get "lumped" together. I've only got a few terrible pictures of my fry, but you can vividly see the coloration on this fish that was about 1.5" TL
